What treaties have Native Americans signed with the United States?
Native Americans in Washington have signed several treaties with the United States. These treaties have sought to recognize the rights of Native American tribal nations in the region, providing them with a degree of autonomy and protection from federal intervention. The first of these treaties was the 1855 Treaty of Point Elliott, which established the Muckleshoot, Suquamish, and Snohomish tribes in the Puget Sound region and granted them hunting, fishing, and gathering rights in exchange for the tribes ceding more than two million acres of land to the United States. These treaties and laws have allowed Native American tribes in Washington to maintain a degree of autonomy and to protect their rights and cultures. They continue to be an important part of the relationship between the United States government and Native American tribal nations in Washington and throughout the country.
