What is the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act?
The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) is a law passed by the US Congress in 1988 that governs Native American gaming in California. Under the IGRA, Native American tribes are allowed to host certain types of gaming activities on their lands, such as slot machines, bingo, and certain card games. The IGRA also sets out the rules and regulations that must be followed by Indian gaming establishments in California. The primary purpose of the IGRA is to provide Native American tribes with a legal framework to conduct gaming activities on their own lands. The IGRA also provides the tribes with a way to generate revenue from gaming activities and make use of the proceeds to support their communities. The IGRA also sets out the rules for regulation and enforcement of Indian gaming activities. The IGRA also requires that all states, in which Native American gambling is conducted, negotiate with Native American tribes in order to reach an agreement on the conditions of the gaming activities. This process is called tribal-state gaming compacts. The compacts are designed to ensure that gaming activities are conducted in a fair and safe manner and that they do not have a negative impact on the Native American community. The IGRA has had a major impact on the economic development of Native American tribes in California. Through the revenue generated by gaming activities, tribes are able to invest in infrastructure, educational, and employment opportunities. The IGRA has also helped create new jobs for Native American communities and has enabled them to gain a sense of sovereignty in their own lands.
