What treaties have Native Americans signed with the United States?
Native American tribes in South Carolina have signed several treaties with the United States. The first treaty was signed in 1777 between the Catawba Nation and the United States. This treaty addressed the ownership of land, the right of the tribe to hunt and fish, and other matters of governance. In 1826, the Cherokee Nation signed a treaty with the United States that ceded over 3.7 million acres of land in the western part of the state. This treaty marked a major milestone in Native American law as it established the basis for both the Cherokee Nation and the United States recognizing each other as biologically and politically distinct entities. In 1866, the Catawba Nation signed a treaty with the United States that established a reservation encompassing 985 acres of land in the Standing Springs area of South Carolina. In 1868, the Catawba Nation signed another treaty with the United States that further established the tribe’s land rights in the Standing Springs area. This treaty provided the Cherokee Nation with a large reservation of land in the western part of the state and granted its members access to certain benefits, such as education, hunting and fishing rights, and the rights to self-govern. This treaty is regarded as an important milestone in the history of Native American law as it marked the beginning of the formal recognition of the Cherokee Nation by the United States government.
