What treaties have Native Americans signed with the United States?

In Washington State, several treaties have been signed between Native American tribes and the United States government. The Treaty of Medicine Creek (1854) was the first major treaty in the area and it established a reservation for the Nisqually, Puyallup, Squaxin, Steilacoom, and other tribes. The Treaty of Point Elliott (1855) recognized the right of the local tribes to keep their lands and also opened up reservations. The Treaty of Neah Bay (1855) protected the Makah Tribe’s fishing rights, hunting rights, and the right to practice their religion. The Treaty of Point No Point (1855) established the Tulalip Reservation and recognized the fishing rights of the local tribes. The Stevens Treaties (1854–1856) were eight treaties that recognized the rights of the Suquamish, Lummi, Nooksack, Quinaielt, Skokomish, Swinomish, Snohomish, Stillaguamish, and other tribes in the Puget Sound area. These treaties also established reservations, recognized the fishing rights of the tribes, and provided for educational facilities. The Yakima Treaty (1855) was signed between the United States and the Yakama and other tribes. This treaty established the Yakama Reservation and granted the Yakama the right to hunt and fish on the reservation and on ceded areas. The treaties established by the United States and Native Americans in Washington State have served as the basis for understanding the complex relationship between the two groups. These treaties provided the tribes with rights and obligations that are still respected today.
