What type of training do nursing home staff receive?

In South Carolina, nursing home staff receive training in the detection and prevention of nursing home abuse. Training must be provided to all facility staff on an annual basis. The training must include an initial orientation, in-service training, and additional training as necessary. During initial orientation, staff must be trained on applicable laws and rules that govern the facility. This includes laws and rules related to nursing home abuse. In-service training should cover topics such as patient rights, proper behavior when interacting with residents, the need for a safe environment and understanding behaviors of residents with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other mental and physical disorders. Additionally, training must be provided to all staff members on how to identify signs of nursing home abuse and how to report any suspected abuse. Staff must be trained on the reporting process, including who to inform when abuse is suspected. This includes local and state agencies, as well as the facility administrator and medical director. Finally, training must be provided to staff on how to handle complaints of suspected abuse. Staff must be trained on the steps to take in order to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all residents, including maintaining appropriate records and keeping residents and their personal information confidential.
