How often should inspections be performed in a nursing home?

In Colorado, the frequency of inspections for nursing homes is determined by the state health department. Generally, state health department regulations require that nursing homes are inspected once every 15 months. However, if a nursing home has been convicted of nursing home abuse or neglect in the previous two years, the state health department may require more frequent inspections. In addition to state health department inspections, nursing homes in Colorado are also subject to inspection by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS is required to inspect all nursing homes twice a year. These inspections are often unannounced and may require an on-site visit by the inspectors. No matter the frequency of inspections, it is important that all nursing homes in Colorado remain compliant with all applicable laws and regulations. Failing to comply can result in fines, suspension of services, or license revocation. Additionally, any nursing home that has been found to have violated Colorado’s Nursing Home Abuse Law could face civil suits and criminal charges. It is important for nursing homes to perform internal inspections and audits on a regular basis in order to stay in compliance. Additionally, it is always a good practice for nursing homes to be transparent and open about the results of inspections by state health departments and CMS. This allows families to have peace of mind that the nursing home is providing the highest quality care and taking steps to prevent nursing home abuse or neglect.
