Who do I contact to report nursing home abuse or neglect?
If you suspect or witness nursing home abuse or neglect in Washington, contact the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services. You can call the 24/7 Adult Protective Services (APS) Hotline to report abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults. You may also contact your local Long Term Care Ombudsman located in each county, who can investigate and resolve complaints on behalf of nursing home residents and their families. You can reach the Long-Term Care Ombudsman at 1-800-562-6028. In addition, you may contact the Washington State Department of Health, which provides licensing and certification for all long-term care facilities in the state. To report suspected abuse or neglect in a nursing home, you can email the department at longtermcare@doh.wa.gov or call the Complaint Resolution Unit at 1-800-633-6828. If the situation warrants, law enforcement should also be contacted. Local police departments and sheriffs can investigate allegations of criminal activity and the Washington State Patrol’s Elder Abuse and Neglect Unit can provide assistance with investigations. Finally, you can also contact the Washington State Attorney General’s Office. The office can investigate potential civil violations and take legal action against nursing home facilities or other parties involved.
