What are some signs of nursing home abuse?
Nursing home abuse is an unfortunate reality for many elderly and vulnerable people living in nursing home facilities in Washington. Recognizing the signs of nursing home abuse is key to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of residents. Some common signs of nursing home abuse include unexplained bruises, falls, and broken bones; emotional distress such as withdrawal, agitation, and depression; disregard for personal hygiene; sudden changes in financial activity; and bedsores. It’s also important to pay attention to how staff interacts with residents. Abusive staff may appear impatient, belittle or threaten the resident, or be reluctant to talk about the resident’s health. Other signs to watch out for are signs of neglect, such as malnutrition, dehydration, and pressure sores, as well as unsanitary facilities and unsupervised residents. If you suspect that a resident is being abused, it’s important to get help immediately. Contact the nursing home or contact local authorities, such as Adult Protective Services or law enforcement.
