Are there restrictions on who can dispense prescription drugs?

In Virginia, restrictions do exist on who can dispense prescription drugs. Only pharmacists or other healthcare professionals that are registered with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy are legally allowed to dispense prescription drugs. Furthermore, the Virginia Board of Pharmacy requires all pharmacists to be licensed before they can dispense any prescription drugs. In order to be licensed, pharmacists must be at least 18 years old, complete a four-year bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, and pass a licensing exam. Additionally, pharmacists must also register with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy in order to obtain a permit to dispense prescription drugs. The permit requires pharmacists to adhere to certain regulations, such as attending continuing education courses and completing all required paperwork. Furthermore, the permit also requires pharmacists to complete a background check and hold malpractice insurance. In order to ensure patient safety, pharmacists must also maintain a written record of all prescriptions that are dispensed. These records must include the patient’s name, date of birth, date of the prescription, drug name, strength, quantity, direction, and the physician’s name. This record must be available for inspection by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy at any time. By following these regulations, pharmacists in Virginia can ensure that they are adhering to the state’s prescription drug criteria and providing safe and efficient services to their patients.
