What is the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)?

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is a law that gives consumers in the state of California the right to know what personal information businesses have collected about them, why businesses are collecting that information, and who they are sharing it with. The law also allows consumers to request businesses delete or stop selling their personal data. The CCPA applies to any for-profit business that operates in California and meets certain criteria, such as having annual gross revenues of more than $25 million, buys, sells, or shares the personal information of more than 50,000 consumers, or derives at least 50% of its annual revenue from the buying, selling, and/or sharing of personal information. Businesses that are subject to the CCPA must provide consumers with a notice that includes information about their data collection and use practices, as well as how consumers can exercise their rights under the law. Furthermore, the law also requires businesses to put a “Do Not Sell” link on their website, allowing consumers to opt-out from the sale of their personal information. The CCPA serves as a reminder to businesses of their responsibility when it comes to protecting the personal information of their customers.
