What are the requirements for becoming a real estate broker?
In California, becoming a real estate broker requires completion of a few key steps. First, applicants must complete a Department of Real Estate (DRE) approved course on real estate principles. This course must include a minimum of three college-level courses, focusing on topics like real estate law and practice, real estate financing, and real estate appraisal. Upon completion of this course, applicants must also pass a state-administered examination. In addition to educational requirements, applicants must also have a certain amount of experience. For broker licensure, applicants must have had at least two years of real estate experience within the five years preceding the application. This must include specified activities such as listing and selling real estate, managing a real estate business, conducting real estate appraisal, or performing real estate appraisal consulting. Applicants must also pass the DRE’s background investigation and pay the appropriate application fee. Criminal convictions of certain serious offenses may disqualify an applicant from receiving a broker license in California. Finally, successful applicants must also take a DRE-approved broker’s qualification course. This provides an overview of the duties and responsibilities of a real estate broker, as well as other important topics related to the profession. It requires the completion of a minimum of 45 hours of instruction. Completion of the steps above will make applicants eligible to apply for a real estate broker license in California. Upon approval, applicants must then become actively involved in the real estate business by affiliating with a real estate broker.
