How do I apply for a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant?
In Michigan, applying for a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant is a multi-step process. The first step is to complete the Small Business Research Program (SBRP) entry form, which is available on the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) website. This form is used to assess and track the progress of all businesses applying for SBIR funds in the state. Once the form has been submitted, businesses should schedule an appointment with a MEDC representative to discuss their application and discuss their eligibility for SBIR funding. During this meeting, the MEDC representative will evaluate the business’s qualifications and determine if it is eligible for the funds. Next, businesses must submit a complete application package, which includes a business plan, financial projections and information about the proposed project or research. It is important to note that the application must be submitted on time, as late applications will not be considered. Once the application package is received, the MEDC representative will review it and determine if the business is eligible for the SBIR grant. If eligible, the MEDC representative will contact the business to arrange for a contract signing and grant disbursement. Following the grant disbursement, businesses are required to report on their progress and submit a final report outlining the results of the project or research. This information is used to assess the success of the grant and determine if additional grants should be awarded in the future.
