What is Social Security Disability?

Social Security Disability (SSD) is an insurance program funded by the Social Security payroll tax. It provides income and medical benefits to individuals who are unable to work because of a disability. In California, SSD is administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA). To qualify for SSD benefits in California, an individual must have a physical or mental impairment that is expected to be permanent and that prevents them from working. The impairment must have lasted or be expected to last for at least one year, or result in death. The SSA considers certain medical conditions to be disabling so that even if a person’s condition does not prevent them from working, they may still be eligible for SSD benefits. The SSA will review an applicant’s medical evidence and work history to determine eligibility. Once approved, individuals are eligible to receive monthly payments to help cover their living expenses. SSD also provides Medicare medical coverage for those who are found to be disabled. SSD benefits can be crucial for many people in allowing them to maintain some financial stability despite their disability. It can be a lengthy process to get approved for SSD benefits, so individuals should make sure to apply as soon as their disability prevents them from working.
