What is a mental health evaluation?

A mental health evaluation is a form of assessment used to determine a person’s mental health status and to identify any mental health conditions that may be present. In California, a mental health evaluation is a key component of the Social Security Disability application process. The mental health evaluation looks at a person’s mental and emotional functioning and evaluates any disability claims related to psychiatric or psychological conditions. A qualified mental health professional administers the evaluation, which typically includes a review of medical records, interviews with the applicant, and psychological testing. The assessment looks for evidence of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, or other mental health conditions. The professional then evaluates the severity of the condition and its effect on the applicant’s ability to work and function in ordinary life. The results of the mental health evaluation are used by the Social Security Administration to determine eligibility for disability benefits. Evidence of severe mental disability may qualify an applicant for disability benefits, while a mild or moderate disability may not be considered grounds for disability.
