What happens to Social Security Disability benefits when someone dies?
When someone in California dies, their Social Security Disability benefits no longer continue. This is true for any disability benefits the person was receiving, including Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). The Social Security Administration will stop payments once the death is reported and verified. Benefits may continue to be paid for a few months after the death to family members who relied on the decedent for financial support. The Social Security Administration may pay a one-time death benefit of up to $255 to a surviving spouse or a child of the deceased. In certain cases, the surviving spouse or children of a deceased person may qualify to receive Social Security Disability benefits based on the deceased person’s work record. This is known as a survivor benefit and the deceased person must have had enough work credits to qualify for it. Designated beneficiaries of the deceased may also be eligible for Social Security benefits. These may include a dependent parent, stepparent, or adopted child. For any of these benefits, the designated beneficiary will need to provide evidence to the Social Security Administration that they are eligible for the benefits.
