How long does a Social Security Disability hearing usually take?
The amount of time it takes to receive a decision on a Social Security Disability hearing varies greatly depending on the individual case. Generally, a Social Security Disability hearing in Washington usually takes 4 to 6 months after the hearing request is submitted. This time frame may be shortened or lengthened depending on many factors. To begin with, the amount of time that it takes to get a hearing date is largely dictated by the availability of the Administrative Law Judge or ALJ. Once a date is set, the ALJ reviews any newly filed information, the claimant’s medical history, and any additional evidence that is provided. The review of the documents could take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Next, the ALJ will hold the disability hearing. This hearing typically lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. During this hearing, the ALJ will ask the claimant questions regarding their disability and the medical evidence that has been submitted. The claimant may also bring witnesses to the hearing and provide additional documents. After the hearing, the ALJ will review all of the evidence and make a decision within 60 to 90 days. If the decision is favorable, the claimant may begin receiving benefits shortly thereafter. If the decision is unfavorable, then the claimant may appeal the decision. Depending on the appeal, it could take several months to receive a decision on the appeal.
