What is a consultative exam?

A consultative exam (CE) is an additional medical examination used in the evaluation of a Social Security Disability (SSD) claim in Virginia. It is requested by the Disability Determination Services (DDS) when a person files a claim for SSD benefits. The CE is ordered when the DDS finds that more medical evidence is needed in order to make a determination as to the claimant’s eligibility. It is performed by a medical specialist who is contracted by the DDS and is usually taken at the DDS office or at an approved provider’s office. During the CE, the examiner will typically review the claimant’s medical records and medical history, and then will conduct a physical and/or psychological exam. The medical specialist may also request lab tests, X-rays or any other type of diagnostic tests depending on the needs of the case. After the exam, the doctor will write a report outlining the results of the exam and any relevant diagnosis and recommendation. This report will be sent to the DDS, and they will use this information in making a determination on the claimant’s eligibility for SSD benefits.
