How often will Social Security review my claim if I am approved for Social Security Disability?

Once you are approved for Social Security Disability, Social Security will review your claim periodically. The frequency of reviews depends on the reason you are receiving disability benefits, as well as your individual circumstances. Generally, if you are considered to have a “medical improvement,” your claim may be reviewed every three, seven, or fifteen years. If your disability is due to a mental illness, or a physical condition considered to be “not static,” such as a spinal cord injury, your claim will likely be reviewed every three years. If you have a condition that is expected to improve, such as multiple sclerosis, your claim may be reviewed every seven years. For other physical conditions, like a cystic fibrosis that is expected to remain stable, it may be reviewed every fifteen years. If your condition doesn’t change, and you remain eligible for benefits, you won’t need to submit updated medical records between reviews. For claims approved in California, it’s important to remember that Social Security may decide to review a claim before the scheduled review period. This may happen if you’ve missed multiple appointments with doctors, if you’ve returned to work, or evidence suggests that your condition has improved. It’s important to stay in contact with the Social Security Administration, and remain aware of their review policies and timelines.
