What is a qualifying disability for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

In California, to qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you must have a qualifying disability. A qualifying disability is one that meets either the medical or non-medical criteria set by the Social Security Administration. For the medical criteria, you must have a physical or mental condition that has lasted, or is expected to last, at least one year or to result in death, and which totally and continuously disables your ability to work. Mental conditions, such as depression and anxiety, are considered as qualifying disabilities. For the non-medical criteria, you must not have sufficient income or available resources. A portion of income and resources belonging to someone applying for SSI are disregarded when calculating the individual’s eligibility for SSI. In addition, in order to qualify for SSI, you must be over the age of 18, a legal resident of the United States, and must not be a fugitive from justice. Exceptions are made for individuals under the age of 18 who are blind or disabled. If you have a qualifying disability, you should contact your local Social Security Administration office to discuss whether you qualify for SSI. Be prepared to provide medical and other relevant information to help evaluate your claim.
