What is a qualifying disability for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

In order to qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), an individual must meet the disability criteria set by the South Dakota Social Security Administration. Those criteria determine if an individual’s disability meets the Social Security Administration’s definition of a disability. Furthermore, those who qualify must also meet certain income and resource requirements. To qualify for SSI, an individual’s disability must meet the Social Security Administration’s definition of disability. In South Dakota, an individual must be found to have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that results in one of the following: (1) the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity; (2) a restriction in one or more basic life activities, such as walking, standing, lifting, speaking, or learning; or (3) the presence of a medically determinable physical or mental condition that causes severe and long-term functional limitations. Additionally, the individual must have limited income and resources to qualify for SSI. In South Dakota, income is defined as wages, any form of government payments, Social Security benefits, and any other type of income from employment or self-employment. The individual’s resources must not exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple. These income and resource limits are subject to change. In conclusion, to qualify for SSI in South Dakota, an individual must have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that results in an inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity, a restriction in one or more basic life activities, or a presence of a medically determinable physical or mental condition that causes severe and long-term functional limitations.
