What is Social Security Disability?
Social Security Disability (SSD) is a federal insurance program that provides assistance for disabled individuals in the United States, including South Dakota. The SSD program is administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA). In order to be considered for SSD benefits, an individual must meet the requirements of a “disability”, which is defined as a physical or mental condition that significantly limits your ability to perform basic work activities. The guidelines for determining disability are based on strict regulations set forth by the SSA. In order to be eligible for SSD benefits, an individual must have worked in jobs that are covered by Social Security. The amount of work an individual must have done for the years they are claiming disability depends on their age and the type of disability they are claiming. To apply for SSD benefits in South Dakota, individuals must work with the Division of Rehabilation Services. This division will review the individual’s disability and work history to determine their eligibility for SSD benefits. Once eligibility has been determined, the individual will receive a monthly benefit to help cover expenses such as rent, food, and medical costs. In South Dakota, SSD can provide much needed assistance to disabled individuals who may not be able to work due to their disability. It is important to note that this program is meant to provide a temporary financial assistance and not a way to make a living.
