In order to be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Virginia, an individual must meet certain criteria. First, a person must have worked in jobs covered by Social Security for a certain length of time, which is generally five of the ten years preceding the year in which the disability began. This is known as having a “recent work” period. The amount of work time can vary depending on the age of the individual. Second, the individual must have a medical condition which has lasted or is expected to last for at least twelve months or result in death. This condition must also meet the definition of “disability” as defined by Social Security. Generally, Social Security defines disability as an inability to do any substantial gainful activity due to a medically-determinable physical or mental impairment. Third, an individual must have sufficient “work credits” earned over the course of employment.
