What are “impairment-related work expenses”?
Impairment-related work expenses (IRWE) are costs incurred by people with disabilities that allow them to work. These costs vary from person to person and can include things like medical equipment or medication needed to continue working, transportation to and from the job, and specialized services, such as sign language interpretation. In California, these costs may be used to reduce your monthly Social Security Disability (SSD) income. This can make it easier for people with disabilities to remain employed and reduce the amount of SSD benefits they are eligible to receive. In order to be eligible for IRWE, an applicant must meet certain criteria. You must first be receiving or be eligible to receive benefits through the Social Security Administration. You must also be employed and have had disability-related costs or expenses that are necessary for the job. Additionally, you must be able to show that those costs or expenses were greater than 3% of your month income, or greater than $30, whichever is less. IRWE benefits can help people with disabilities stay employed, which can help increase their financial security. By reducing the amount of SSD benefits an individual is eligible for, it can help reduce the financial burden of disability-related costs. For those living in California and receiving disability benefits from the Social Security Administration, IRWE can be a valuable resource to help them stay employed and decrease their monthly disability income.
