What are “impairment-related work expenses”?

Impairment-related work expenses (IRWEs) are expenses related to an individual’s disability or impairment that are required for them to work. This includes costs related to special equipment, medical supplies, or transportation costs. In Virginia, these expenses are subtracted from the person’s gross wages, which in turn, may make them eligible for increased Social Security Disability benefits. IRWEs for a person with a disability can include: any necessary expenses required for the person to work such as wheelchairs, prosthetic devices, hearing aids, and special transportation costs; medical supplies such as prescriptions drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and medical equipment; and any impairment-related counseling or vocational or therapeutic treatments. IRWEs are not limited to medical expenses or required by the person for their disability. It is important to keep any relevant receipts for expenses that are directly related to allowing a disabled person to work. These receipts are typically needed to prove the work expenses and allow for maximum benefits for the disabled person. When filing for Social Security Disability in Virginia, all expenses related to the disabled individual’s work must be documented. Providing proof of these expenses is essential in order for the disabled individual to receive the maximum benefit available.
