What is the deadline for making estimated tax payments?

In Virginia, taxpayers are required to make estimated tax payments if they expect to owe more than $1,000 in taxes after withholding taxes from their wages or other income. The due date for estimated tax payments falls on the 15th day of the fourth, sixth, ninth and twelfth months of the taxable year. For individuals on a calendar year, this means April 15th, June 15th, September 15th, and December 15th are the estimated tax payment due dates. If an individual’s estimated tax payments are late, they may be subject to a penalty, unless the taxpayer meets certain criteria allowing them to avoid penalty. The criteria includes having no tax liability for the preceding tax year, or having no tax liability for the current tax year if the taxpayer forwent claiming certain credits. For taxpayers who rely on income from farming, the due dates for estimated tax payments are different. The payments for farming income are due on the 15th day of the third, sixth, ninth, and twelfth months of the year, or January 15th, April 15th, July 15th, and October 15th respectively. If taxpayers are unable to meet the due date for estimated tax payments, they should take steps to make payment as soon as possible to avoid any penalties. Taxpayers should contact the Virginia Department of Taxation to learn how to make estimated tax payments.
