How long does it take to register a trademark?

It typically takes between four to six months to register a trademark in Washington. The process begins when an individual or business files an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The USPTO reviews the application to make sure that the mark meets all of the requirements of federal trademark law. The USPTO also searches their databases to make sure that the mark is not confusingly similar to one that is already owned by someone else. Once the USPTO approves the trademark application, it will be published in a special federal publication. After the mark is published, the public has 30 days in which to oppose the registration. If no opposition is received within the 30-day period, the USPTO will issue a certificate of registration. The entire process, from filing the application to receiving the certificate, can take four to six months.
