What is utilities law?
Utilities law is a branch of law that deals with the regulation of electricity, natural gas, and other utility services. In Arkansas, utilities law was created to ensure that everyone has access to reliable energy resources, and to ensure that energy companies provide fair and reasonable prices for their services. To accomplish these goals, the Arkansas Public Service Commission (PSC) is responsible for monitoring, regulating, and enforcing utilities law in the state. This includes setting the rates that companies can charge for energy-related services, making sure that customers are not being overcharged, and ensuring that the quality of services that companies provide is up to standard. Apart from setting and enforcing rates, the Commission also deals with any disputes that arise between utilities companies and their customers. This includes dealing with issues related to billing, contract disputes, service outages, and other customer concerns. Beyond the PSC, the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office also has a role in utilities law, in particular in dealing with cases of deceptive or illegal practices by utilities companies. Attorneys from this office work to ensure that customers are protected from unfair and deceptive practices. In short, utilities law in Arkansas was developed to protect consumers and ensure that they have access to reliable and reasonably priced energy resources. The Arkansas Public Service Commission and the Attorney General’s Office are the two main bodies responsible for enforcing state utilities law.
