What types of health care services are available to veterans?
Veterans in Washington have access to a wide variety of health care services from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). These services are provided through VA medical centers and community-based outpatient clinics. Veterans may receive health care for any medical condition, provided it is related to their military service. VA health care services include preventive care, primary care, specialty care, mental health care, and long-term care. Preventive care services include physicals, vaccinations, health screenings and counseling. Primary care services include diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, management of chronic conditions, and referrals to specialists. Specialty care services include audiology and speech pathology, neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Mental health services include diagnostic assessments, individual and group counseling, interventions for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental illnesses, alcohol and drug abuse treatment, marriage and family therapy, and rehabilitation programs. Long-term care is available for veterans who are unable to care for themselves, through VA nursing homes and community-based programs. In addition to these services, the VA also offers a variety of other health resources, such as a 24-hour hotline, a women’s health program, and a Pharmacy Benefits Management service. Veterans can access these health care services through their local VA medical center or community-based outpatient clinic.
