How do I apply for disability compensation?
In Louisiana, a veteran can apply for disability compensation in several ways. The first step is to contact the closest Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) office and schedule an appointment. The VBA office staff can provide information and assistance with the application process. The application for disability compensation must be completed in its entirety and include all medical records, discharge papers, and military service records. The application must be submitted to VBA along with any relevant supporting documentation. A Veterans Service Representative will review the application and any supporting documents and then contact the veteran to determine the level of disability and if the veteran is eligible to receive benefits. In addition, a veteran may also qualify to receive VA Aid and Attendance benefits. This benefit is reserved for veterans who require assistance with daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, eating, and medication management. The veteran must provide evidence that the activities are necessary for their condition. The veteran’s income will also be taken into consideration when determining eligibility. Once the application and documents are submitted, it will be reviewed and a decision will be made. If approved, the veteran can expect to receive disability compensation benefits within a few weeks.
