Are there specialized services available to certain veterans?
Yes, there are specialized services available to certain veterans in the state of Virginia. Veterans who are eligible for these services have served in the armed forces, are disabled or have a disability connected to service, or have died while in service. Some of these services and programs include health care and disability benefits; education and training; home loans; life and disability insurance; employment assistance; and death and burial benefits for veterans and their dependents. Additionally, there are many veterans protected by Federal and State laws from discrimination. This includes, but is not limited to, employment and housing. Veterans who have served in combat and/or been awarded certain medals also have priority in government job hiring. Specific to Virginia, there are special programs available to veterans who are disabled or have limited income. These programs are administered by the Department of Veterans Services, which provides assistance and guidance to veterans regarding benefits, and help filing claims for compensation or other assistance. In addition, the Virginia Department of Veterans Services provides special counseling services for any veteran needing help coping with their experiences and any issues that may have arisen from their period of service. All of these services and programs are aimed at providing increased support to veterans and their families and are part of many of the initiatives enacted by the state to support veterans.
