What are my options for education or training after leaving the military?

After leaving the military in Washington, there are a variety of education and training options available. Under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, veterans can receive up to 36 months of tuition assistance for a college or university education, vocational/technical training, apprenticeships, or on-the-job training. Veterans may also qualify for additional services through the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) program, including help to find employment and specialized training programs. In addition to these federal benefits, many Washington schools, colleges, and universities provide their own programs in support of veteran education and offer special scholarships or discounts for student veterans. Additionally, many employers have programs available for veterans that provide a range of services, including counseling on career choices and understanding the job opening process. For veterans looking for job training, there are a number of certified programs in Washington that can offer specialized courses in any number of fields. These courses usually focus on the technical skills necessary for the job, as well as other aspects such as leadership, communication, and critical thinking. No matter the route taken after leaving the military, Washington has a variety of options available for veterans seeking education and training. By taking advantage of the federal benefits, local programs, and special programs through employers and schools, veterans can obtain the skills they need to transition successfully into a civilian career.
