What is the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program and how do veterans qualify?

The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program (VR&E) is a federal program administered through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that helps veterans who have a service-connected disability prepare for, find, and keep gainful employment. This program helps veterans move on to meaningful careers, obtain training, and obtain assistance transitioning into the workplace. To qualify for the VR&E program, veterans must have a service-connected disability rating of at least 10%. Additionally, veterans must have separated from the military within the last 12 years, or have a service-connected disability rating of at least 20% to exempt from the 12-year requirement. Veterans must also be willing and able to participate in the program and their eligibility will be determined by both a VA Medical Center and a VA Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. The VR&E program provides a variety of services that can help veterans transition into the workforce. These services includes employment counseling, job placement assistance, vocational training, job seeking skills, and other employment-related services. The program also provides additional services such as educational counseling, financial assistance, and other supports. Once the veteran is approved for the program, a VA Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor will assist with developing an individualized plan to assist in their efforts to secure gainful employment. This plan may include completing an apprenticeship program, on-the-job training, or tuition assistance for an educational program that matches their interests and abilities. The VR&E program is a great resource for veterans that want to transition back into the civilian workforce. With the assistance provided, veterans are better equipped to make a successful transition and earn a good living to support themselves and their families.
