How do I transfer my GI Bill benefits to my children?

In order to transfer your GI Bill benefits to your children in California, you must first meet certain qualifications. First, you must have served at least six years in the armed forces and have at least four years left on your GI Bill. You must also be a member of the Selected Reserve or the Individual Ready Reserve, or have been honorably discharged. Once you have met the eligibility requirements, you will need to submit a Transfer of Benefits form 22-1990e to the Department of Veterans Affairs. This form must be signed by you and your eligible dependents (children). Once submitted, the Department of Veterans Affairs will review your eligibility and determine if you qualify for the transfer. Once approved, your dependents can now use the GI Bill benefits to pursue their educational goals. Your children will be eligible for up to 36 months of GI Bill benefits, which can be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, housing, and living expenses. It’s important to note that you can only transfer your GI Bill benefits to a dependent if you have not used the benefit yourself. Also, you may only make one transfer of benefits in your lifetime, so be sure to consider all of the available options before making a decision.
