How do I transfer my GI Bill benefits to my children?

Transferring GI Bill benefits to your children can be done in a few easy steps. In Louisiana, veterans must first apply online through the Department of Veterans Affairs website for the Post-9/11 GI Bill Transfer of Entitlement Program. The veteran must provide documentation of their service, and those who are still active must provide a signed Statement of Service. Once the application is completed, it must be approved by the Department of Defense before the veteran can transfer any of their remaining eligibility to their children. The veteran must then complete atransfer request for each dependant they want to transfer benefits to. A list of potential recipients must also be submitted. If the veteran is desiring to transfer from other GI Bill Programs, they must provide details of their prior service such as discharge documents and proof of eligibility in that program. Once approved, each dependant will be given a Certificate of Eligibility and will have 36 months of GI Bill benefits available to them. The benefits are good for 10 years from the date of transfer and each dependant may use the benefits in any way they choose. They may use them for college, technical training, apprenticeships, or even licensing and certification expenses. In order to transfer GI Bill benefits to your children, the veteran needs to meet the eligibility requirements and fill out all required forms. Once approved, their children will have access to GI Bill benefits for up to 36 months. It is important to keep in mind that transferred benefits have a 10 year expiration date, and are not transferable to another dependant after that date.
