How do I transfer my GI Bill benefits to my children?

In Virginia, veterans can transfer their GI Bill benefits to their dependents, such as their children. To do this, veterans must first establish their eligibility for the Post-9/11 GI Bill by having at least six years of active duty service and qualifications for at least a "Honorable" discharge. Once eligibility is established, the veteran must log into the Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB) website and submit a request to transfer the benefits. Upon approval, the veteran must choose which dependents will receive the benefits. The eligible dependents must then submit a VA Form 22-1990e, Application for Benefits, to the VA Regional Processing Office in order to receive the benefits. The dependent must also apply for admission to an approved educational institution. Once all the necessary forms are submitted and approved, the veteran will need to review and sign a request for transfer of benefits that will be provided by the VA Regional Processing Office. If approved, the veteran’s benefits will be transferred to the dependent and will remain in effect until the dependent has exhausted the allotted benefits. Overall, the process for transferring GI Bill benefits to dependents in Virginia is relatively straightforward, however it is important to make sure all the necessary paperwork is completed and submitted to the VA Regional Processing Office in a timely manner to avoid any delays for the transfer of benefits.
