Is there a VA home loan program and how do veterans qualify?
Yes, Virginia has a home loan program for veterans. This program, called the Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS), provides eligible veterans with access to long-term, low-interest mortgages and other assistance to help them purchase or refinance a home. To qualify for the program, veterans must be a resident of Virginia, have been an active duty member of the Armed Forces of the United States, and have been honorably discharged or retired from their service. Additionally, they must not have been dishonorably discharged and must have served a total of at least 90 days of active duty, unless they were medically discharged after having served at least 30 days. Veterans must also be a first-time homebuyer or have not owned a home within the last three years in order to access the VVFS home loan program. Additionally, they must meet certain income and credit requirements. These include a minimum gross annual income of $50,000 and a credit score of at least 620. Veterans are also required to attend a homebuyer education class – at their own expense – to help them better understand the home buying process. Finally, veterans must also provide proof of a valid Certificate of Eligibility to verify their eligibility for the program.
