Are veterans eligible for Social Security benefits?

Yes, veterans are eligible for Social Security benefits in the state of Washington. Social Security benefits for veterans are different than for non-veterans, which means that veterans can receive greater benefits in some cases. Generally, veterans are eligible for Social Security if they served active duty for at least 90 days in the U.S. armed forces, and are over the age of 62. Additionally, veterans who have a severe disability that was caused or made worse by active duty are eligible to receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. If a veteran is receiving a VA disability benefit, they may be eligible to receive Social Security benefits as well. If a veteran’s retirement pay is reduced due to a VA award, the VA will pay Social Security on the portion of the benefit that was reduced. In this situation, the veteran will receive both their VA and Social Security benefits. To qualify for Social Security benefits, a veteran must have a Social Security number. Veterans must also show proof of service to the Social Security Administration (SSA). Proof of service can include a DD-214, a certificate of release or discharge from active duty, or another document from the military. To apply for Social Security benefits, veterans must submit an application to the SSA.
