What is the VA Education program and how do veterans qualify?
The VA Education program, also known as the GI Bill, is a program designed to help veterans of the United States Armed Forces receive benefits for higher education. The program was established as part of the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 and has been providing educational and financial assistance to veterans since then. To qualify for the VA Education program, veterans must have served at least 90 days of active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and received an honorable discharge. Veterans who were members of the National Guard or Reserves are also eligible if they were called to active duty, served at least 181 days, and received either an honorable discharge or a service-connected disability. The program provides assistance that can be used for tuition, fees, supplies, textbooks, and other educational expenses. Benefits are also available for the pursuit of some specialized training and career development, including on-the-job training, apprenticeships, and non-college degree programs. Veterans can apply for state and federal benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Veterans can also visit the VA Education website to learn more about the program, find out how to apply, and find out what programs and benefits are available in their state.
