Is there a VA pension program and how do veterans qualify?
Yes, Louisiana has a VA Pension benefit program for veterans. This program is available to veterans who are 65 years or older, totally and permanently disabled, surviving spouses, or those who have limited income. In order to qualify for the VA Pension, veterans must meet certain eligibility requirements, including having a discharge other than dishonorable from one of the armed forces, having served 90 days or more of active duty with at least one day served during a period of war, and having a current countable family income below the maximum annual pension rate. Surviving spouses of veterans may also receive the VA Pension benefit once they meet the service and discharge requirements of their deceased spouse. Total and permanent disability payments are available to veterans or their surviving spouses for any disability that is not service-connected. To qualify, veterans or their spouses must have low income to be below the annual pension rate and be unable to work due to the disability. In addition to the VA Pension program, Louisiana veterans may be eligible for other VA benefits. This includes access to health care, home loans, education and training, and vocational rehabilitation. All of these benefits are intended to help veterans and their families lead comfortable and productive lives.
