How do I prove I have a service-connected disability?

In order to prove you have a service-connected disability in Washington, you must provide the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) with evidence. This evidence must show that you have an illness, injury, or disease that you can link to an event or activity during your time of service. You will need to show medical evidence from a doctor that states the current condition of your illness, injury, or disease and its connection to your military service. It can be helpful to include anything related to your service such as discharge paperwork, military records, and any other information that can verify the connection. The more evidence you provide, the better. You may also need to provide evidence of a stressful situation during your service, such as a traumatic experience or circumstances that may have caused or aggravated your illness, injury or disease. This could include a documented military campaign, hazardous service, service in a war zone, or a stressful job or living situation in the military. If you cannot provide evidence to prove your disability is service-connected, you may still be eligible to receive benefits. You can file a claim with the VA and provide as much documented detail as you can. The VA will review the evidence you provide and make a determination on your eligibility.
