What is a combined disability rating?
A combined disability rating is a form of disability rating used in the veteran disability benefit system in Washington. In this system, each disability a veteran has is rated from 0 to 100 percent with a corresponding monthly check. When a veteran has more than one disability, these numbers are added together to reach a combined disability rating. This rating is used to calculate the veteran’s total monthly disability payment. For example, a veteran may have two disabilities, with ratings of 10 and 30 percent. The combined disability rating would be 40 percent. This rating would be used to determine the veteran’s benefit amount, which is typically rounded up to the nearest cent. The amount is calculated using the number of years served, the disability rating, and applicable inflation rates. Veterans can also receive additional financial support, like special monthly compensation, if their disability evaluation is greater than 100 percent or if they have an especially disabling condition. This can also be given to veterans with a combined disability rating over 100 percent. A combined disability rating of over 100 percent can also qualify a veteran for additional support and services, including vocational rehabilitation and an exemption from copayments when they receive health care services.
