Is a victim of a violent crime entitled to any compensation?

Yes, victims of violent crime in California are entitled to compensation. This is done by the California Victim Compensation Program (CalVCP). The program was established in 1965 to reimburse victims for out-of-pocket expenses resulting from violent crimes. Eligible expenses can include medical bills, mental health counseling, lost wages, funeral expenses, and relocation costs. To be eligible for compensation, victims must meet certain requirements. These include reporting the crime to law enforcement, cooperating in the investigation and prosecution of the crime, and filing the claim within one year of the crime. Victims must also have suffered physical, emotional or financial harm as a result of the crime. CalVCP provides compensation to victims even if the perpetrator of the crime is never caught or prosecuted. In addition, victims are eligible to receive compensation regardless of their immigration status, race, or gender. CalVCP has Victim Compensation and Government Claims Board to administers compensation applications. Victims can submit applications online, by mail, or in person. For more information, victims should contact their local CalVCP office or visit the California Department of Justice website.
