What is the federal minimum wage?
The federal minimum wage is the lowest hourly wage an employer can pay an employee for their work. In the United States, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, and it has been this way since July 2009. However, some states have a higher minimum wage than the federal minimum wage. In Maryland, the minimum wage was increased in July 2019 to $10.10 per hour, a $1.25 increase over the 2018 minimum wage of $8.85. This was the most recent increase in the minimum wage for Maryland. For employees who receive tips, the minimum wage is $3.63. The Maryland minimum wage applies to all businesses with 15 or more employees, and for businesses with fewer than 15 employees, the minimum wage is $10.00 per hour. In addition to the federal minimum wage, employers must also comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The FLSA sets standards for wages and overtime pay for certain types of employees. It also sets limits on the number of hours a minor (under 18 years of age) can work. It is important for all employers to be familiar with both the federal minimum wage and the FLSA.
