What are the restrictions on working hours for minors?
In Arizona, minors are subject to wage and hour restrictions based on their age and the type of job they are doing. For minors under the age of 16, the Arizona Department of Labor requires employers to adhere to certain labor laws regarding the number of hours minors may work, when they can work, and what kind of work they can do. Under the law, minors aged 14 and 15 are only allowed to work 3 hours per school day, and 8 hours per non-school day, with a maximum of 18 hours in any one week. Minors of this age are also not allowed to work before 7 am, after 9 pm, or more than 40 hours in a week. Additionally, they may not work in hazardous or dangerous occupations. Minors aged 16 to 18 may work up to 8 hours a day and 48 hours a week, but are also subject to the restrictions on working times. They may not work before 5 am or after 12 am, and must also receive a thirty-minute meal break after five hours of work. In addition to these restrictions, minors are not allowed to work in certain occupations or industries, such as working in bars, manufacturing tobacco products, operating any type of power-driven machinery, or operating any type of motor vehicle. Overall, the restrictions on working hours for minors exist to protect the safety and well-being of young workers in Arizona. It is important that employers comply with state labor laws to ensure that minors are working in safe and legal conditions.
