What is the difference between overtime hours and double time?

Overtime hours and double time refer to different types of payment for hours worked beyond the normal hours expected for an employee. In California, the regular workweek is limited to 40 hours. If an employee works beyond 40 hours during a single week, any hours beyond that are considered overtime hours. Employers in California must pay employees 1.5 times their normal rate of pay for overtime hours. This rate is known as “time-and-a-half.” As well, employees must be paid time-and-a-half for any work performed on the seventh consecutive day of the workweek. California law also requires employers to pay double their regular rate of pay for any hours an employee works that exceed 12 hours in a single day. This rate is known as “double time.” As well, employers must pay double time for work done on the seventh consecutive day of the workweek if it exceeds 8 hours. In summary, overtime hours refer to hours worked beyond 40 hours in a single week and must be paid at a rate of time-and-a-half. Double time refers to hours worked beyond 12 hours in a single day or 8 hours worked in a single day on the seventh consecutive day in a workweek and must be paid at a rate of double the employee’s normal wage.
