What are the differences between compensatory time and paid time off?

Compensatory time and paid time off are two distinct types of time off available to employees in Louisiana. Compensatory time, also known as “comp time”, is a type of accrued time off that employers can provide to employees for hours worked beyond the standard 40. Comp time is only available to non-exempt employees, and must be used in the same manner as overtime pay, at an equivalent rate of 1.5 times the employee’s regular rate of pay. Paid time off is a type of leave that allows employees to take time off and still receive pay. The type of paid time off benefit available to an employee varies from employer to employer, but generally includes vacation days, holiday pay, and sick pay. Unlike comp time, which may be used only at the discretion of the employer, paid time off must be used at the discretion of the employee, and employers are not able to require employees to use it. Paid time off benefits can also be used in increments, such as half-days or full days, while comp time must always be used in full-time increments.
