What are the rules for paying interns?
In Louisiana, there are certain rules about wages and hours that apply to interns that employers must follow. Interns are considered employees and, as such, must be paid for their work. Minimum wage laws apply to interns just like any other employee. Currently, the minimum wage in Louisiana is $7.25 per hour. If an intern works for more than 40 hours in a week, they must be paid an overtime rate of 1.5 times their regular rate. Louisiana has two types of internships: unpaid and paid. Unpaid internships are allowed under certain conditions. Generally speaking, the internship must provide an educational experience and the intern must be considered a trainee and not a regular employee. Paid internships must follow the minimum wage laws. Employers must also follow the rules for other types of employees when it comes to interns. For example, they must provide appropriate breaks and lunches and comply with all safety requirements. Interns must also be aware of their rights. They have the right to a safe work environment and should not be expected to do any task that is outside of their training. They should also be paid on time and in full. Any questions about wages and hours should be directed to the Louisiana Workforce Commission.
