What rights do employees have under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)?

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is a federal law which sets minimum wage, overtime pay requirements and employee rights for employees in Maryland. It covers most private and public employers. Under the FLSA, employees have the right to receive a minimum wage of at least $7.25 per hour for all hours worked. This amount may be higher in certain states, such as Maryland, as the state has its own higher minimum wage requirement. For employees who are paid an hourly wage, they have the right to overtime pay for any hours worked beyond 40 hours a week. Employees also have the right to receive at least one and a half times their regular rate of pay for those overtime hours. Employees also have the right to be protected from any form of harassment or discrimination from their employer. This includes protection against harassment or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information. Employees have the right to a safe workplace, free from recognized hazards. The FLSA requires employers to provide their employees with a workplace that meets safety and health standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Employees have the right to be paid accurately and on time. The FLSA requires employers to accurately count time worked and pay employees wages that are due on their regular payday. The FLSA also provides employees with the right to be informed of their rights and responsibilities. Employees have the right to receive written notice of their wages and any changes to their wages, as well as any other rights and responsibilities associated with their job.
