Are there any international laws relating to water?
Yes, there are international laws relating to water. Though water law in Washington is largely governed by state and regional regulations, the global community has taken steps to protect the world’s water resources on a much larger scale. There are several international treaties and agreements that relate directly to water law. The most prominent of these is the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, commonly referred to as UNCLOS. This treaty, which was signed in 1982, seeks to ensure the equitable use of the world’s oceans and coastal waterways. This agreement establishes rules for navigation, maritime boundaries, fisheries and economic exploitation of the ocean’s resources. Another important international water law is the Helsinki Convention, which was signed in 1992 and is often referred to as the “Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes.” This treaty sets out rules for the management and protection of international watercourses and lakes, including provisions for the prevention and reducing of water pollution. Finally, the 1972 Stockholm Declaration, also known as the Declaration of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, gave rise to the concept of environmental sustainability, including the protection of water resources. This declaration laid the groundwork for numerous international treaties and conventions, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity, which seek to protect the world’s water resources. Though each of these international agreements is important in its own right, they all ultimately aim to provide guidance and protections to the world’s water resources. Together, they form an international framework that allows countries to work together to ensure the sustainability of our planet’s water resources.
