When can I begin receiving workers' compensation benefits?

In the state of Florida, workers’ compensation benefits can begin after an injury or illness that has been reported and accepted by the employer. The employer must report your injury to their insurer or the state’s Division of Workers’ Compensation within seven days of learning about it. Once the injury or illness has been accepted, you can begin to receive benefits. The first type of workers’ compensation benefits available are medical benefits. These benefits may include doctor visits, hospital stays, medication, physical therapy, and other related medical expenses that are associated with the injury or illness. These benefits are usually provided to you as long as you need treatment for the injury or illness. The second type of benefits are wage replacement benefits. These wages will typically be two-thirds of your average weekly wage and will be paid on a bi-weekly basis. However, you must be out of work for a certain amount of time for these wages to be paid. If a worker is permanently disabled due to their injury or illness, they may also be eligible for permanent total disability benefits. This may include a lump sum payment, a one-time benefit, life-long payments, and other forms of compensation. Generally speaking, the amount of time it takes for you to begin receiving workers’ compensation benefits depends on your employer’s insurer and how quickly they process your claim. You should get an answer about your claim within 7 days of reporting your injury.
